Daytime mode: 25 coffee shops, and a map that flips

  • +isitactive now answers two questions instead of one. In the evening it's still "where's it actually happening?" — but during the day it's "can I get a seat?", across 25 new coffee shops, bakeries, markets and food halls.
  • +Use the work/play switch in the top corner to move between them. The app guesses from the clock — cafés before 5pm, bars after — and remembers whichever you pick.
  • +Busy means the opposite thing in each mode, so we stopped pretending otherwise. A café at 95% now reads FULL in warning orange, not PACKED in celebratory green. The scale runs OPEN, ROOMY, COMFY, FILLING, CROWDED, FULL — and the list leads with the emptiest spot rather than the busiest.
  • +Day mode is light. The whole app switches to paper instead of black, the map with it, because a bar map at midnight and a café map at 9am shouldn't look like the same screen.
  • +New neighborhoods came along with the cafés: FreeMoreWest, Elizabeth, Camp North End, Enderly Park, Wesley Heights and Park Road are all filter chips now.
  • +Search still finds everything in either mode. Looking up a bar at two in the afternoon works fine.
  • +New spots: Amélie's (NoDa and Park Road), Optimist Hall, all three Rhino Markets, Not Just Coffee at Atherton Mill and 7th St Market, Undercurrent, Smelly Cat, The Hobbyist, HEX, Both Giddy Goats, Night Swim on Brevard, Stable Hand, Waterbean, Coco and the Director, Thousand Hills, and Not Just Coffee on Jay St.

Six ways to say how busy it is

  • +Busyness now has six levels instead of four: DEAD, QUIET, CHILL, LIVELY, BUSY, PACKED. The old scale called a place "dead" when there were plenty of people in it, and "packed" while it was still filling up.
  • +The middle is where most nights actually happen, so that's where the new room went. QUIET is a handful of people, CHILL is a comfortable seat, LIVELY is a good crowd. BUSY means you'll be hunting for a table, and PACKED is now reserved for genuinely shoulder-to-shoulder.
  • +In practice a bar that ramps up over the evening now reads CHILL, then LIVELY, then BUSY, then PACKED at its actual peak — instead of jumping straight to PACKED at nine and sitting there all night.
  • +The map opens on South End, where about half the spots we track are, so you start on the bars instead of on an empty stretch of I-77.
  • +Filters lead with the neighborhoods and vibes that have the most places in them — "south end" and "chill" are the first chips you see now, instead of the last.

A map you can actually use one-handed

  • +Hot right now sits at the top of the map — the three busiest spots we can confirm are live, no tapping to find them. Collapse it with [−] if you'd rather have the map, and it'll stay that way next time.
  • +Search moved to the bottom of the map on your phone, where your thumb already is, and the results open upward so you can see them while you type.
  • +New "near me" button on the map centers it on you and drops a dot where you're standing, so you can tell at a glance which spots are actually walkable. The map also opens closer in — less empty highway, more bars.
  • +"Was this accurate?" now sits right under the busyness reading instead of at the bottom of the venue page. If what we showed didn't match what you walked into, it's one tap to tell us.
  • +Less clutter overall: the scrolling ticker along the bottom is gone, and the connection indicator moved to the about page. The nav bar spans the screen evenly on mobile instead of hugging one side.
  • +Lorem Ipsum Listening Bar has been removed — that location is closing and moving.

Find your kind of night, and a cleaner venue page

  • +Filter the list by neighborhood — South End, Plaza Midwood, NoDa, Uptown and more — so you're only looking at spots you'd actually walk to.
  • +Filter by vibe too: dive, cocktails, dancey, patio, sports, live music, or just chill. Tap a chip to narrow the list, tap again to clear it.
  • +"Near me" sorts the list by how close each spot is and shows the distance on every row. Your location is used right there on your phone to sort — never saved, never sent anywhere.
  • +Venue pages are cleaner: one clear card answers "how busy is it right now?", and when a place is filling up or winding down we say so, so you can time your trip. The hour-by-hour history is still there, tucked behind a tap for when you want it.
  • +Sharing a venue in a group chat now shows a live preview card — the spot's name and how busy it is right now — so everyone can see the vibe without opening the link.

Tell us when we're wrong + a clearer daily chart

  • +Every venue page now has a "was this accurate?" thumbs up/down under the live reading. If what you saw on the map didn't match what you found at the door, tap 👎 — it helps us find the venues where our data is off.
  • +Once enough people weigh in, each venue shows how accurate the community found it. No account, nothing tracked about you — just the vote.
  • +The TYPICAL TODAY chart is readable now — the whole day's shape shows at a glance (it was rendering almost invisibly before), so you can actually see when a spot ramps up and when it's dead.
  • +Cleaner map on phones: "hot right now" tucks into a tap-to-open pill so it no longer crowds the search box.

Plan ahead: typical hours, favorites, hot right now

  • +Every venue page now has a TYPICAL TODAY chart — how busy the spot usually gets, hour by hour, with a "usually busiest around 10 PM" hint. Check it before you head out.
  • +Star your favorites — tap [☆] in the list or on a venue card and it pins to the top of your list. Saved on your device; still no account.
  • +Hot right now — when venues have confirmed live readings, a strip on the map ranks the top three busiest. Tap one to jump to it. If you don't see the strip, nothing is verifiably live at that moment — we'd rather show nothing than guess.

Honest live vs. typical labels

  • +We get our busyness signal from BestTime. When BestTime detects enough current foot-traffic at a venue, the reading is LIVE — what's actually happening now.
  • +When traffic is too light for a live read, BestTime falls back to what the venue is typically like at this hour of the week. We now label that clearly as ~ TYPICAL instead of pretending it's live.
  • +Most of our venues are small enough that BestTime can't sample them live most of the time. Expect to see TYPICAL more often than LIVE — and trust the LIVE label more when you do see it.
