// privacy

last updated 28 august 2026

isitactive has no accounts, no sign-in and no ads. There is nothing to log into, so there is no profile of you to build — and that isn't a policy decision we could quietly reverse, it's how the thing is built.

This page says exactly what that means, including the parts that aren't “nothing”.

// Stays on your device

Your starred venues, your work/play preference, whether you've collapsed the “hot right now” panel, and the record that you already rated a venue today. On the website these live in your browser's local storage; in the iOS app they live in the app's own storage, shared with its home screen widget.

None of it is sent to us. That's also why none of it follows you — starring a bar on your phone won't star it on the website, because there's no account to carry it across.

Your location, when you turn on “near me”, is read on your device to sort venues by distance and center the map. It is never transmitted, never stored, and is discarded when you close the page or the app.

// What our server receives

Ordinary request data. Like any website, our servers see the IP address a request came from. We use it to rate-limit abusive traffic and nothing else — it isn't stored alongside anything you did, and it isn't used to build a profile.

Accuracy votes. When you answer “was this accurate?” we record the yes or no along with the reading that was on screen. No identifier of any kind is attached.

Specials and events you submit. The text you type, whether it's a special or an event, and whether you said you're the venue or a visitor. A person reads every one before it appears. It is published publicly, so please don't put personal details in it.

// Push alerts (iOS app only)

If you turn alerts on, your phone gives us an Apple push token. We store that token on its own — not linked to a name, an account, or a list of venues.

That's deliberate, and it's why your starred venues can stay on your phone. The notification we send is silent and identical for every device: it carries no venue and no text, and exists only to wake your phone so it can re-read the public busyness data and decide for itself whether one of your starred spots is worth mentioning. We never learn which venues those are.

Turning alerts off in the app deletes the token from our server.

// Analytics

The website uses Vercel Analytics and Speed Insights to count which pages and features get used — for example, that someone opened a venue page or switched modes. The events carry no personal information and aren't used to track you across other sites.

The iOS app contains no analytics of any kind. There is no SDK in it, so there is nothing to opt out of.

// Other companies involved

Running this involves a handful of services. None of them are sent anything about you beyond what's described above.

  • Vercel hosts the website and provides the analytics described above.
  • Railway hosts the backend that stores venue readings.
  • BestTime.app supplies the anonymized foot-traffic figures. We ask them about venues, never about people — they receive nothing about you.
  • Mapbox serves the map tiles on the website. Your browser fetches those directly, so Mapbox sees your IP address. The iOS app uses Apple's MapKit instead.
  • Apple delivers push notifications for the iOS app and provides its maps.

// About the camera venues

Some venues can opt into an on-site camera instead of foot-traffic estimates. That pipeline counts people and nothing else: no face detection, no recognition, no identity, and no raw video ever reaches this website or the app — only a count and an annotated still.

No such camera is deployed at any venue today. This paragraph is here so it's already been said if one ever is.

// Children

isitactive is a guide to bars, breweries and cafés and isn't directed at children. We don't knowingly collect anything from anyone, of any age.

// Changes

If this changes, the date at the top changes with it. Anything that meaningfully affects what leaves your device will also be called out on the updates page.
